On The Ballad Of The King And The Judge

Let your heart and not others guide you Court success with effort and she will marry you But be wary of the mistress, Pride

A peasant told his ambitious son of a tale

One he hoped would teach him a lesson:

The King is dead!

Some say the cook poisoned his meal

Others he was smothered as he slept in his bed

But they all agreed it was about time he paid his overdue bill

Why did the King die?

He was mean and full of greed

He took from his people until they had nothing

One voice of dissent, a whole family dead at the guillotine

But it wasn't always so, those of old age would say

The peasant was noble and that's why we made him King

What did the King think?

Some of the thoughts that run through his head

Some which he would have shared albeit he was a bit dead

I need to tax more, store more, and be in want no more

As for those against me, enemies of progress

Finish them off, before they plunge the state into distress

I was a peasant but now I am King!

The state was in disarray

They looked to the judge to take over

He, however, didn't, to their dismay

He was found dead

Why did the judge die?

He was found hanging by his neck

Like the many criminals he'd sentenced

Only this time he was the criminal, the judge and his own hangman

What a shame

Why did the Judge do it?

There are many reasons why this was so

Issues only the judge knew,

Problems he might have shared, albeit he was a bit dead

Of how he only became a judge to succeed his father

And how he many a time dreamt of how life would be

If he'd been a painter as his passions led him to be

Pressures of his life forced him to take a way out

Die as he lived

By the noose

Son, listen to the story and learn

Let your heart and not others guide you

Court success with effort and she will marry you

But be wary of the mistress, Pride

A beautiful maiden, she has trapped many in her stride

Life isn't easy

But do not despair

Take action

Be happy
