On All Girls Being The Same I

They bored him. Inexplicably, incredibly and all of a sudden, girls bored him.

Harrison wasn't gay, no, he definitely wasn't gay. At times, he used girls to prove to himself that in fact, he played ball for just the one team. Now, the afternoon sun scorching his forehead as he lay on the lawn, he took a trip down memory lane and remembered them all.

First, there had been Fiona. As cold as it was to admit, he had known all along that he wasn't in the least interested in her. But at that time, with hormones running wild, everyone expected the most good-looking guy in class to date the prettiest girl. So, he humoured her. He humoured them all. They called themselves a couple. Harrison knew it was going nowhere and finally, inevitably their thing dwindled and they let each other go. In high school, he used the long school hours and demanding monotonous study time to hide from others his distaste for girls. The physical reaction was there but the interest just wasn't. It never really was.

So, after high school, it happened again. This time it was Claire. She was obviously interested in him. They usually were when they first met him. This time though, he wanted to experiment. See what the fuss was all about. So, he did. For the first time, Harrison got physical with someone. They did not have sex. No, neither of them was comfortable with it. But they indeed got close. Then, yet again, as exciting and glaring as their Fire was, it died down. Leaving him unmoved as ever. And Claire, oh sweet Claire, was left hurt, way worse for wear. It bothered him that he had hurt her like that. But not nearly enough to make him think twice.

Then, as it were, she came along. The one who almost changed everything. She was a Tracy- the Tracy. She didn't have the prettiest face, nor the most beautiful body. She didn't even have the most beautiful voice. This time, unlike before. She wasn't what our objective society would refer to as a 10. For the first time, it was her personality, her very essence that entrapped Harrison. For a moment or two, she made him believe, no, entertained the very idea of what the ignorant pure-hearted so blissfully refer to as "love". They got along so well. So sweetly well that Harrison didn't see it coming. He let his guard down. He started to believe that he loved her. They had gotten physical...not sex, but it was more than that. It was a lot more than that. They connected in a way he had never thought possible. Even as he attracted numerous girls wherever he went, Harrison remained faithful. "This time" it would be different. No one could have prepared him for what was coming. So, when that fateful day finally arrived, almost as if it was fated to, she broke off their relationship saying she had feelings for someone else.

"Si twende" (Let's go). His lady friend called. Adjusting to the blazing sun, his eyes watched her. She had her ever-present gleeful grin on her face standing some distance away. For a moment, Harrison wondered what the hell he was doing. Then, as quickly as that feeling came over him, it vanished-an ability he had mastered. A quarter mile at a time. He smiled back and shouted, "You're paying!" as he got up and ran after her, their laughs and giggles so blissfully drowning the emptiness in each of their young lives. Maybe this time would be different.
